The past few weeks have been mostly spent in the office. In order to plan for the future we must have an understanding of the past. Not only is going over the numbers from last season needed in order for us to file our taxes it gives us a great view of what is working and not working for the farm. Now is the time to make any adjustments we need to before diving in to the next season. When we think about sustainability we think of the obvious environmental pieces (taking care of the land, closing nutrient cycles, etc.) but just as important is making sure it financially sustainable.
Currently my time is divided between the farm and my full time off farm job. This means that all my time working on the farm must be spent as efficiently as possible. Now that we know what the demand looks like for Pastured Duck and our Pastured Black Label Chicken we will put more of energy and resources behind these enterprises. Our CSA is critical to our financial sustainability. It allows us to plan and bring our customers exactly what they want. Last year we spent close to $6,000 on grain and another $2,000 for the chicks and ducklings. This is just a portion of our over all budget. The CSA allows our customers to invest and purchase their share up front so the operating loan we take out is that much less. So, Thank You!
We will be at the Burlington Winter Farmers' Market Today (Saturday) from 10-2! Stop by and pick up a Pastured Chicken and some Farm Grazed Goat. If you want to chat about the season ahead or have questions about the CSA then stop by.
